Stanford Leader: Michael Shanks (Archaeology / Classics)
This group brings together a multidisciplinary, multicontinental team to investigate the importance of presence in archaeology and media studies. Topics include: the presence of the past - from its effect upon political opinion to the cultural politics of heritage; surveillance tracking of the digital citizen; the politics of association in virtual online worlds; political representation in an age of digital media. The group is experimenting with collective publication through wikis, as well as co-creation in virtual reality environments such as Second Life.
