Tony Judt: "After Dissent: The Intellectual Condition in Contemporary Europe"

Tony Judt is the Remarque Professor of European Studies at New York University. Professor Judt's subject was the self-doubt which currently obsesses the intellectual communities of Europe, East and West alike. He argued that we are witnessing the end of an era that spanned two centuries between the Fall of the Bastille and the Fall of the Berlin Wall. During this period humanist intellectuals spoke for all-embracing projects and visions, pronouncing such views in the name of "humanity." Such a moral position is no longer possible, and Professor Judt speculated on the causes and consequences of this historic shift.
