A set of shame sanctions called “infamous sanctions” were part of the French penal code until 2003, when they quietly disappeared. The longest legacy of the Old Regime, infamous sanctions played a key role in building the Republic in 1791 and in its reconstruction in 1945. Shame brought about by law turned out to play a positive role in two major national crises, the Revolution and the Second World War: Why?
