Jeffrey Solomon on The Art of Doing Good
Doors Open at 5:00pm. Program 5:30pm to 7:00pm.
Join author Jeffrey Solomon for a conversation about his new book and how launching a nonprofit venture can be one of the most powerful ways to change the world. The program will run from 5:30pm to 7:00pm.
In THE ART OF DOING GOOD: Where Passion Meets Action (September 24, 2012; Jossey Bass), world-renowned philanthropist Charles Bronfman and nonprofit expert Jeffrey Solomon, draw on their own leadership roles in the nonprofit world, as well as interviews with 18 inspiring social innovators, to provide a practical roadmap for aspiring social entrepreneurs.
With a balance of encouragement and caution, Bronfman and Soloman share how to tackle the challenges and questions that will arise along every step in a nonprofit founder’s journey including:
· Bringing your idea to life, getting it off the ground and finding support
· How to excite and engage your staff and select board members who are aligned with your cause
· How to ramp up from being the entrepreneur to a manager as your nonprofit grows
· Identifying and choosing among your nonprofit’s available paths to growth, such as a centralized hub-and-spoke model (like the YMCA and the Red Cross) or a more decentralized franchise model (like City Year).
· Being creative about harnessing alternative revenue streams besides fundraising, such as in-kind donations in lieu of cash, charging for your services, and competing for innovation and development prizes
