CONFERENCE: Piranesi, Paestum, and Soane

On the occasion of the exhibition at the Cantor Arts Center, Piranesi’s Paestum: Master Drawings Uncovered (August 19, 2015–January 4, 2016), this symposium brings together an international gathering of experts in the field to discuss theoretical issues revolving around Piranesi’s drawings of Paestum and the architect who would eventually acquire them, Sir John Soane. The topics range from the European debate over authenticity in architecture and the differing visions of its primitive origins, as various exemplified in the Greek and Etruscan antecedents, to Soane’s own engagement with Piranesi through his architectural designs and drawings of Paestum, to he influence of Piranesi early American architecture and urban planning.
