Stanford’s MLA Program and the Stanford Humanities Center are pleased to host Professor Caroline Winterer for an interview and a discussion of her book American Enlightenments: Pursuing Happiness in the Age of Reason.

Caroline Winterer is the Anthony P. Meier Family Professor in the Humanities at Stanford University and Director of the Stanford Humanities Center.
The author of three previous books, in 2013 Professor Winterer received an American Ingenuity Award from the Smithsonian Institution. Since the publication of American Enlightenments in 2016, she has lectured at The Commonwealth Club, has been interviewed on KQED’s Forum, and has spoken on NPR’s The Takeaway.

American Enlightenments: Pursuing Happiness in the Age of Reason is a provocative reassessment of the concept of an American golden age of European-born reason and intellectual curiosity in the years following the Revolutionary War.
