Darian Totten (Davidson College): Salapia in Apulia: Contextualizing a coastal Roman port in the Late Antique period

Scanty and inconsistent ancient sources have left questions open about the fate of the Roman port of Salapia in Late Antiquity. In this talk, I paint a fresh picture of the settlement's urban character and role in the broader context of Apulia, based on newly emerging archaeological evidence brought to light by the Salapia Exploration Project from 2013-2015 and a reassessment of the ancient sources.
Darian Marie Totten is an assistant professor of Classics at Davidson College and co-director of the Salapia Exploration Project in Puglia, Italy.  She received her PhD in Classical Archaeology at Stanford University in 2011.
