Energy Seminar: Stanford at COP 21: Student Discussion Panel

Ben Chao

Maria Doerr is a junior in Environmental Systems Engineering with a focus on Urban Environments. While in Paris for COP21, she interviewed civic leaders from around the world about subnational involvement in the Paris Climate Agreement and incorporated them into a podcast. The podcast, entitled Cities Can, can be found www.climate-stories.org. At Stanford she is a leader in Students for a Sustainable Stanford, an oral communications tutor at the Hume Center, and a soprano in Talisman a cappella.

Charlie Jiang is a senior at Stanford pursing a B.S. in Engineering Physics with a focus on materials science, renewable energy, and energy policy. As co-president of Students for a Sustainable Stanford and an organizer with Fossil Free Stanford, Charlie has worked to improve sustainability at Stanford and broaden environmental education among the Stanford community. Charlie has conducted research into novel solar cell technologies, environmental issues in Nepal, and localized impacts of climate change in the U.S. His current projects include creating a film about the role of small island nations in international climate negotiations.

Moderator:

As the Deputy Director of the Earth Systems Program, Richard Nevle is devoted to fostering the intellectual formation of students poised to become the next generation of environmental leaders and problem-solvers. He teaches a number of courses in Earth Systems including a field seminar on the geology, ecology, and environmental history of the Eastern Sierra Nevada. In his research Nevle assembles reconstructions of climate history from natural archives to elucidate drivers of past climate change. Most recently, his research has focused on the study of interactions among Holocene climate, human land use, and fire ecology. Nevle received his PhD in Geological and Environmental Sciences from Stanford in 1995.
