Jukka Huhtamäki, The Global API Ecosystem: A Deep Dive Into Gaming. Digital platforms play an increasingly transformative role in the global ecosystem of interactive media and games. Recently, we studied one type of platform boundary resource, namely application programming interfaces (APIs). We examined more than 15,000 APIs and mashups, mapping the global locations where APIs are created. Our results show the global distribution of APIs, and their concentration in various parts of the world. In this talk, I will dig deeper into the gaming API ecosystem to share insights about the development of interactive games. On the side, I will discuss the process and tools we used in our data-driven methodology.

Jukka Huhtamäki, D.Sc. (Tech.) is a postdoctoral researcher at the Business Data Research Group (DARE) at Tampere University of Technology and a founding member of the Innovation Ecosystems Network, an international community of scholars investigating business and innovation ecosystems. Jukka is investigating the structural properties of ecosystems, such as the national ecosystems in Finland, European level EIT ICT Labs, and the Silicon Valley. Jukka is developing computational methods for investigating digital ecosystems. Here, digital ecosystems refer to a broad area that covers platform-based ecosystems, API ecosystems, and other types of business and innovation ecosystems that have a digital dimension. His doctoral dissertation, Ostinato Process Model for Visual Network Analytics: Experiments in Innovation Ecosystems, is available online HERE.

Interactive media and games increasingly pervade and shape our society. In addition to their dominant roles in entertainment, videogames play growing roles in education, arts, science and health. This seminar series brings together a diverse set of experts to provide interdisciplinary perspectives on these media regarding their history, technologies, scholarly research, industry, artistic value and potential future. As the speakers and title suggest, the series also provides a topical lens for the diverse aspects of our lives.
