Human Cities Expo

This is an Archive of a Past Event

What is a human city? How do we define it and where do we see examples of it? How might each of us play a part in advancing human-centered development in cities? Join us for the launch of the Human Cities Initiative at Stanford, which aims to get at the heart of these questions through class offerings, fellowships, and research. In doing so, we aim to practice ethical approaches, using frameworks that are inclusive (for many) and participatory (by many), and strive to benefit human beings and their diverse communities.

Hear presentations by students from Stanford University and Tsinghua University in Beijing, China in the International Urbanization Seminar and Stanford students in Civic Dreams, Human Spaces. Lightning chats from scholars and expert practitioners will provide further food for thought, as well as feedback and discussion.

Multinational teams from the International Urbanization Seminar will present their work: creating a public education campaign to address air pollution impacts on senior citizens, curating an exhibit for a community museum in a historic Beijing hutong neighborhood, and developing a new digital archive of Beijing’s roads and infrastructure.

Interdisciplinary project groups from the d.school Civic Dreams, Human Spaces studio explored new opportunities to enhance public spaces in San Francisco that encourage inclusion, ownership, and civic engagement. The class collaborated with the City of San Francisco to examine and inform their current efforts along Market Street, which serves as the major thoroughfare and symbolic lifeline of the City.
