Peter Vargyas is professor of ancient history and presently head of Department of Ancient History and Archaeology at the University of Pecs, Hungary. He has written extensively on economic history of ancient Mesopotamia and Ugarit.
Vargyas' current work examines the role of silver in the ancient Near East, based on both written and archaeological sources, which will be the subject of a forthcoming book with the working title "Before Coinage: A History of Money in the Ancient Near East." A comparison of archaeological and textual materials will result in a new understanding of the role of money and market in Mesopotamia and Egypt and challenges both the substantivist approach of Polanyi and his followers and Rostovtceff's thesis of ancient capitalism.
