By combining the extraordinarily rich documentation of Ptolemaic Egypt with social theory, my dissertation sheds new light on how military institutions shaped power structures within villages and between local and central state institutions. The aim of this project is to explore the organization of the army, its role in society as a vehicle for land distribution, as a provider of group solidarity and social networks, and finally as a place of interaction between Greek and Egyptian culture.
