Incoming fellows should complete and return the following forms to the Fellowship Administrator by May 31st :
*Fellows' CVs and project descriptions will be compiled into a reference book given to all Center fellows and staff at the beginning of the fellowship year; we will not share these materials with anyone outside the Center without your permission.
These pages contain specific information, forms, and "to do" lists for fellows to review before they arrive. Please also see the main resources page for more general information on housing, childcare, computing, and University resources.
The fellowship year officially runs from September 22, 2008 to June 12, 2009. Fellows may move into their offices on or after September 5, 2008, and must by in residence by the first official day of the fellowship year. Incoming fellows' offices are guaranteed through July 1, 2009. This list of key dates (including the university academic calendar and holidays) may be useful in planning for a fellowship year here.
Each September, the Center arranges an orientation for new fellows during the first two weeks of the year that includes introductions, a welcome picnic, a group photo, meetings with Center directors, building tours, health and safety training, and a session on Stanford's sexual harassment policy. Orientation culminates with a picnic to welcome fellows and their families to the Center community. The Orientation Schedule (with descriptions, dates and times for all activities) will be available soon.
Incoming faculty fellows from other campuses must complete and return two forms to the Fellowship Administrator by the end of May: the Fellows Pay Plan form and the LA-6 form. (Stanford faculty and graduate student fellows do not need to turn in these forms).
Fellowship stipend checks for external fellows are mailed on the 25th day of the month, starting as early as September 2008. Housing stipend checks are paid quarterly or monthly, depending on the payment schedule designated by the fellow. Graduate Student fellows' stipends, TGR fees, and research supplements are paid quarterly (checks are typically mailed on the first day of the quarter). Stanford faculty fellows remain on their same payment schedule during their fellowship year.
Stanford's Community Housing Services office provides online listings of housing close to campus. Their website is located at www.stanford.edu/dept/hds/chs . The fellowship administrator will provide access information to incoming fellows since this site is restricted to Stanford affiliates. The Palo Alto Weekly and Craigslist are also excellent sources of housing leads.
The best time to start looking for housing is in early June, as it is close to the end of the academic year and there are many campus and local vacancies. If incoming fellows would like to receive housing listings from our office (from currents and former fellows and responses to Stanford Report ads we place) please fill out and return the Housing Preference Form.
The Center (in cooperation with Stanford's Bechtel International Center) works with international fellows to secure J Visas for their year at Stanford. Because this process is often lengthy and complicated, we start working on Visa requests in May. International fellows should expect to be in regular contact over the summer preceding their fellowship with the fellowship administrator regarding Visa paperwork and logistics.
All faculty and graduate student fellows of the Center have private offices. Fellows may move into their offices on or after September 5, 2008, and must be in residence by the first official day of the fellowship year (September 22, 2008). In May we send all incoming fellows a packet of information about offices (including a floorplan, descriptions, a sheet for you to mark your preferences on, etc) and an Office Preference Form which is due at the end of July. Please be sure to review your office choice in person if at all possible. We will let you know your office assignment in mid-August.
Each faculty fellow makes an intellectual contribution to the Stanford community. External Faculty fellows do this by either participating in a Research Workshop, or teaching a class in a Stanford department or through Stanford's Continuing Studies Program, and arrange this with Humanities Center Associate Director Matthew Tiews. Humanities and International Studies fellows contribute by participating in a working group through the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, and arrange this with Fellowship Administrator Ronda Fenton.
A Visiting Scholar ID card is ready for each external faculty fellow upon arrival in September. This ID grants access to Stanford facilities (including libraries and athletic facilities). External fellows have full faculty-level library priviledges during their fellowship year.
Incoming faculty fellows from other campuses must complete and return the Computer Usage Policies form to the fellowship administrator by the end of May in order for us to arrange for their Stanford email account and access to secure areas of our website.
Fellows have access to desktop computing support on an as-needed basis throughout their fellowship year. When a new fellow arrives in the Fall, he or she should ask the office coordinator to help schedule an individual appointment (with our computer support consultant) to set-up any computer they have brought. (All fellows are eligible to buy computers and software at a discount through the Stanford Bookstore).
Computing resources at the Center include several computer kiosks, a computer lab, and a wireless network connection. There is a "Tech Tour" during Fall Orientation that covers technology resources and support available to fellows.
Center staff prepares facilities and resources for incoming fellows. This partial list gives a sense of the kinds of support fellows can expect.
The Humanities Center may select up to eight undergraduates as Undergraduate Research Assistant Fellows. Undergraduate fellows are selected in the Autumn, and spend the year working on collaborative research projects with faculty fellows at the center. Prior to the start of a fellowship year we send incoming fellows information about this program; participation is completely voluntary. Over the summer incoming fellows may be contacted by students interested in working with them. (There is detailed information about the Undergraduate Fellows Program posted on our website).
If you would like to consult with
the fellowship administrator or
associate director about any area
of the program, please feel free to be in touch by email or to arrange a
tour if you are in the area.
