This fellowship program brings undergraduate students to the intellectual life of the Humanities Center. Undergraduate fellows spend up to a full academic year working on collaborative research projects with a faculty or Geballe fellow at the Center serving as a mentor. Depending upon the research interests of the applicants and fellows in residence, up to two of these undergraduate fellowships may be sponsored by a Geballe Dissertation Fellow (only applicants in their senior year will be eligible to work with Geballe Fellows).
Fellowship awards are made to students who wish to work closely with a sponsoring fellow and who are interested in fostering connections between the Humanities Center and the undergraduate community at Stanford. These fellowships are awarded and renewed on a quarterly basis throughout the academic year, on the mutual agreement of the sponsoring fellow and the student.
Faculty or Geballe fellows are eligible to apply with a registered Stanford undergraduate for one Undergraduate Research Assistant Fellowship. A sponsoring fellow and an undergraduate with similar research interests design a project and then apply as a team for undergraduate fellowship support. Each fellowship provides a stipend for the undergraduate of $1,125 per quarter for up to 10 hours per week of research work. No course credit is allowed for work done as part of this fellowship.
Undergraduates writing honors theses, students who intend to write honors theses, and/or students who are interested in pursuing research beyond their course requirements would be good candidates to apply for these fellowships. Ideally, undergraduate fellows are majoring in a humanities department. However, the program may also include majors from any department as long as they are working on a humanities-related project.
After identifying an undergraduate to participate as an Undergraduate Research Assistant Fellow through the program, a faculty or Geballe fellow should fill out an application form in collaboration with this student. Completed applications should be submitted to Robert Barrick, Fellowship Administrator (ID Mail Code: 4015).
