The Spatial History of Passage Rights in the Old Reich

Date and Time:
Monday, October 9, 2017. 05:30 PM - 08:00 PM
Meeting Location:
Humanities Center Boardroom
Meeting Description:

We will meet at 5:30 for dinner. Luca Scholz will give a short background sketch of his work, followed by questions and discussion.

Luca is a Mellon Fellow in the Humanities and a lecturer in the history department here at Stanford. His doctorate is from the European University Institute in Florence, and he has taught at the Free University of Berlin. His work traces the travelers, jurists and officials who negotiated passage on the roads and rivers of the Holy Roman Empire, one of the pre-modern world’s most fragmented regions. His book challenges conventional conceptions of pre-modern statehood, and offers a new account of how modern states claimed and disputed rights of passage.
