- Lesbian Gay Queer Studies

Description: The workshop will meet four times per quarter, with some sessions devoted to public lectures by lesbian and gay speakers and most reserved for smaller group discussions that explore the current research projects of workshop participants. Research agendas expected to be addressed include: essentialism and social constructionism in lesbian, gay, and queer studies; gender performance; class, race and sexualities; the challenge of reconstructing gay and lesbian history; definitions of deviance and sexual boundaries. Regular participation is expected of workshop members. Readings will be provided, and junior faculty and graduate students will be eligible for small research grants (to purchase books, e.g.). Seminar conveners are Professors Estelle Freedman (History), Janet Halley (Law), and Paul Robinson (History). Workshop membership will be limited to a total of approximately 25 faculty and graduate students. - Seminar on Enlightenment and Revolution: The Spaces of Enlightenment

The schedule is as follows: Friday October 10th. 10 am - 12; Friday November 7th. 10 am - 11.30; Friday December 5th. 10 am - 12; Readings will be distributed upon request (lomax@leland).
- The Iberian World

The first meeting will be in the History department Lounge, 3rd floor of building 200, on Friday, September 26 at noon. The workshop will meet four times per quarter and will feature work in progress by students and faculty as well as papers from invited speakers. The workshop will be organized in a rough chronological order: in the Fall quarter we will concentrate on the pre-contact societies and the Spanish incursion into the Americas. Winter quarter presentations will deal with the consolidation of colonial societies and the impact of colonization on Europe and the Americas. In the Spring quarter, we will encourage presentations on the break-up of empire with particular attention given to the Spanish-Cuban-American war in light of the centennial of 1898
