Since its inception in 1980, the Humanities Center has offered external
fellowships to more than 150 faculty from nearly 100 universities in
the United States and other countries. External fellows come from all
ranks of the professoriate and from a wide variety of colleges and universities.
The Center typically offers six to eight external fellowships each year.
Faculty fellowships are awarded across the spectrum of academic ranks (assistant,
associate and full professor) as well as to independent scholars.
Applicants with Ph.Ds awarded on or before September 2001 are eligible
for the 2004-2005 competition. Senior fellowships are for established
scholars who are more than ten years beyond receipt of the Ph.D.
Junior fellowships are for scholars who will be at least three years
beyond receipt of the Ph.D. and generally no more than ten.
Junior fellows are awarded stipends of up to $35,000 and senior fellows
stipends of up to $50,000. In addition, a housing and moving allowance
of up to $10,000 is offered, dependent upon need. Applicants are expected
to seek supplementary funding in the form of external grants or sabbatical
or other contributions from home institutions.
