Meeting Description:
About the speaker:
Jennie Pyers is Associate Professor of Psychology at Wellesley College.

Studies with speakers of spoken languages have demonstrated a relationship between the acquisition and use of spatial language and some aspects of human spatial cognition.  Signers of both emerging and established sign languages help clarify the nature of this relationship. In this talk, I present evidence from learners of an emerging sign language, adult users of several established sign languages, and deaf children acquiring American Sign Language to show both modality general and modality specific interactions between spatial language and human spatial cognition.
