We will meet at 5:30 pm for dinner. Jesse Howell will give a short background sketch of his work, followed by questions and discussion.

Jesse Howell earned his PhD from the Center for Middle Eastern Studies and the Department of History at Harvard University. He is a former fellow at Koç University’s Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations in Istanbul, and his dissertation deals with the Ragusa Road, an overland network that linked Istanbul with the Adriatic Sea. He studies the Ottoman state’s manipulation of patterns of mobility in the Mediterranean through diplomacy, infrastructure-building, and administrative policies.
