Date and Time:
Thursday, November 20, 2014. 04:00 PM - 06:00 PM
Meeting Location:
Board Room, Stanford Humanities Center
Meeting Description:

This presentation will detail the emergence of African-American owned and managed life insurance companies and the problem of valorizing black lives at the dawn of the twentieth century. In analyzing the contradictory and fugitive practices of an industry that was not meant, by mainstream standards, to succeed, it seeks to combine empirical research into the actuarial method and aesthetic analysis of storytelling, performance, and design.

About the speaker:
Shirley E. Thompson, Associate Professor of American Studies, University of Texas Austin.
