Meeting Location:
Building 200, Room 302
Meeting Description:

In this session, historian Louis Hyman situates the gendering and degendering of temporary labor from 1945 to 1970 alongside temp work’s migration from the margin of the labor force to its center. By problematizing the notion of choice, he explores the ways in which temp work transformed from a way to substitute for a worker in an emergency to supplying entire shifts, projects, and functions for corporations. The upshot is a story of how one company, Manpower Inc., assaulted the core value of job security.

About the speaker:

Louis Hyman is Assistant Professor of History at Cornell University.
