Join us as Professor James Smith discusses how artisanal mining communities in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo experience Digital Age capitalism. By drawing on oral narratives and other ethnographic data with miners and middlemen, he shows how an extractive economy in tantalum, tin, and tungsten shapes understandings of space, time, and value.

 James H. Smith is Associate Professor of Anthropology at UC Davis.
