Quality of What? On the Concept and Currency of Merit

Date and Time:
Thursday, February 22, 2018. 06:00 PM - 08:00 PM
Meeting Location:
Stanford Humanities Center, Baker Room
Workshop:
Feminist/Queer Colloquium
Meeting Description:

In recent years, many organizations have come to terms with the fact that they have "diversity problems." But what specific normative issues do these "diversity problems" refer to and what are organizations obligated to do in the face of them? In my book project, I take up the following question: given persistent group-based oppression, how should current organizations in the United States distribute power-conferring roles? What is wrong with what they are currently doing, and how could they do it better? In chapter 2, which I'll present at the workshop, I comb through existing philosophical approaches to distributing power-conferring roles and point out their shortcomings, explaining why we need an empirically-grounded and non-idealized approach that focuses on the actions of organizations rather than focusing exclusively on the actions of individuals or on macro political and social forces.

Lily Lamboy is a PhD candidate in political science.
