Queer Art History

Date and Time:
Thursday, March 8, 2018. 04:00 PM - 06:00 PM
Meeting Location:
Levinthal Hall
Workshop:
Feminist/Queer Colloquium
Meeting Description:

“Queer Art History” will consider how each of the three terms in its title inflect and dislocate the others.  The presentation is grounded in specific works of art that subvert normative aesthetic conventions and conventions of display in order to propose alternative sexual cultures and possibilities. Richard  Meyer’s approach will also be grounded in close attention to the history and visual representation of sexual minorities in selected historical moments and social contexts.  “Queer Art History” understands feminist and queer studies as distinct, if sometimes allied, fields of inquiry. It considers both the alliances and tensions between the two fields.

Richard Meyer is a professor of art history at Stanford University.
