Racial Capitalism and Economic Knowledge in the American Colonial Philippines

Date and Time:
Thursday, December 4, 2014. 04:00 PM - 06:00 PM
Meeting Location:
Board Room, Stanford Humanities Center
Meeting Description:
Through the lens of subjectivity and knowledge production, Lumba explores the entangled histories of race, empire, and capitalism in the American colonial Philippines. What is the relationship between the production of subjectivity through economic knowledge and capitalism? In what ways did racialization through knowledge enable novel forms of imperial governance and create new sites and means of capital accumulation? Join us for a discussion of the ironies of economic knowledge and the emerging radical politics antagonistic to race, empire, and capitalism.

About the speaker:
Allan Lumba, Global American Studies Post-doc fellow (Charles Warren Center), Harvard University.
