Translation as Interpretation in The Prince: Contestation over the Rendering of Machiavelli's Conceptual Vocabulary

Date and Time:
Thursday, June 7, 2018. 03:00 PM - 04:30 PM
Meeting Location:
Humanities Center, Watt Dining Room
Workshop:
History of Political Thought
Meeting Description:

Jacqueline Basu's project analyzes an array of contemporary translations of Machiavelli's The Prince, supplementing traditional reading strategies with computational techniques. Translation, in this analysis, serves as a site of conceptual interpretation. Sites of high variation between translations, uncovered by computational analysis, reveal a deeper ambiguity about the precise scope and definition of Machiavelli's conceptual framework.

Jacqueline Basu is a doctoral candidate in the Political Science Department.
