Ancients and Moderns brings together faculty and graduate students at Stanford and beyond who explore the question of how Europeans and Americans since the Renaissance understood and in fact created the idea of classical antiquity. More generally, this workshop explores the meaning of the past in the construction of modernity, exploring the material, cultural, and intellectual dimensions of the dialogue with antiquity. We are defining "classical antiquity" here as those cultures flanking the Mediterranean basin from prehistory until roughly 500 ACE, such as Greece, Rome, Egypt/North Africa, and the Middle East.
« The pursuit of intellectual discovery and contribution are always in the forefront of the research workshop presentations.
