This workshop explores the origins and manifestations of ethnic (and related forms of religious and social) violence in the borderlands region of East-Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe. Ethnic violence in the borderlands area is not a new area of study, and has been analyzed from numerous angles and by many scholarly disciplines. The Borderlands workshop intends to explore the large geographic area of all four empires, including the Ottoman Empire and Republican Turkey, approaching the violence through both the humanities and the social sciences. The Borderlands workshop will allow the organization of faculty, graduate students, and visiting researchers already working on this broad theme.
