Michael Thomas Taylor is Associate Professor of German at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. This essay is part of a project examining the history of marriage in Germany from the Enlightenment to the present day. Other publications from this project include a book co-authored with four scholars from Germany, Vor der Familie: Grenzbedingungen einer modernen Institution (Before the Family: Limits of a Modern Institution, Konstanz University Press, 2010). Together with Annette F. Timm, he curated PopSex!, an exhibition combining contemporary art with archival material from the early 20th-century history of sexuality in Berlin, which was shown in January 2011 at the Alberta College of Art + Design in Calgary, Alberta. A catalogue and edited volume of scholarship from that exhibition is currently under review.
