Film Screening: The Class (2008)

This is an Archive of a Past Event

This Palme d’Or winning French film is based on the novel written in 2006 by François Begaudeau entitled Entre les murs, translating literally to “within the walls.” The novel is a semi-autobiographical account of the author’s experience as a French language and literature teacher in a middle school in the 20th arrondissement of Paris. The film explores the complex relationships between the teacher and a group of “problem children,” the notion of authority and respect, and the issues arising from the diverse cultures and ethnicities represented in the classroom. Deeply moving, it stages the French education system under an original and humanist angle.

This film is part of the Winter 2015 film series, Real Fictions. Find a full list of films here
