This award-winning Brazilian film tells the story of Dora (Fernanda Montenegro), a middle-aged former schoolteacher who writes letters for illiterate children in Rio de Janeiro’s Central train station. There, she meets Josué (Vinícius de Oliveira), a poor 9-year-old, and the two strike up an unlikely and intimate friendship that takes them from Rio to Brazil’s northeast in search of the boy’s father on a heartwarming and heartbreaking journey.
