Freedom in the Abstract: The Socialist Monument in and after Yugoslavia

Andrew Herscher, Associate Professor, University of Michigan
Post-socialist historicization has often not left space for the possibility that socialist art and architecture could have allowed for identifications with the socialist project outside the context of state socialism. Did the socialist state maintain a monopoly on the socialist project? Could socialist art and architecture have been more faithful to socialism than the socialist state? And could counter-histories of socialist art and architecture re-frame the post-socialist present? This talk will explore these and related questions by looking at monuments to Yugoslavia’s history, both in and after Yugoslavia.
