The Humanities in Tomorrow's Schools: "Almost Everything Changes"

The Common Core State Standards Initiative is currently implementing a new K-12 curriculum across public schools in California. Common Core will significantly change how children learn both humanities and STEM. In English and Language Arts, for example, the standards focus on developing "careful analyses, well-defended claims, and clear information" using "complex texts and their academic language," with the aim of developing "college- and career-level reading." 

As educators, we have a responsibility to become informed about this policy. The Humanities Education Focal Group and School of Humanities and Sciences Dean's Office are pleased to host Dr. Michael Kirst, President of the California State Board of Education, to speak about Common Core, and Dr. Jennifer Wolf, Senior Lecturer in the School of Education, to lead a discussion of how Common Core will impact the teaching of humanities in public schools. 

We invite you to join us on Friday, April 8th, at 12:00 for a lunch-time lecture and discussion with Dr. Kirst and Dr. Wolf. 

We will be focusing on the English and Language Arts standards of the Common Core.
