Laetitia Sonami

This is an Archive of a Past Event

Groundbreaking composer, performer, technologist, and sound installation artist Laetitia Sonami presents an evening of performances developed by her and in collaboration with Éliane Radigue and Paul DeMarinis.

Sonami's  sound performances, live-film collaborations, and sound installations focus on issues of presence and participation. She has devised new gestural controllers for performance and applies new technologies and appropriated media to achieve an expression of immediacy through sound, place, and objects. Best known for her unique instrument, the elbow-length lady's glove, which is fitted with an array of sensors tracking the slightest motion of her hand and body, she has performed worldwide and earned substantial international renown.

Recent project includes the design of a new instrument, the Spring Spyre, based on Rebecca Fiebrink's Wekinator, a collaboration with Eliane Radigue and her improvisation duo with James Fei, Sparrows and Ortolans.

Sonami gives extensive workshops and classes. She tries to familiarize and enthuse students to adapting old technologies and new media to the creative process and thus expand their field of imagination and play. She is a visiting faculty at the San Francisco Art Institute (Design and Technology Department), Mills College (Music), and Bard College MFA Summer program (Music).
