A rare tabla solo recital by Pandit Subhankar Banerjee, considered by many to be the most virtuosic tabla player of his generation. He will be accompanied by his son Aarchik Banerjee on tabla and Manoj Tamhankar on harmonium.

Banerjee is renowned for his virtuosity and his improvisitional ability. He is a uniquely creative player who is unafraid to explore new paths in addition to showing mastery of the rich and complex tabla repertoire.

Banerjee is a long-time disciple of Swapan Shiva of the Farrukhabad gharana. Additionally he studied for several years with Pandit Manik Das of the Benares gharana. He has toured with many of India's leading musicians, including Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, and Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma. In addition, he has performed with jazz greats such as John McLaughlin.

Presented by Spicmacay Stanford and Parag Chordia. A special thanks to Professor Anna Schultz and the Stanford Department of Music, without whom this concert would not be possible.
