Pizza, Poetry, and Performance

This is an Archive of a Past Event

Sexual assault has become a central topic in this year’s presidential election. The night after the election, let’s move the conversation from the political arena to the concert stage. How do we continue engaging with art that aestheticizes sexual violence? Join Professor Heather Hadlock, Associate Professor in Music; Anna Wittstruck, Interim Music Director of Stanford Orchestral Studies; and mezzo-soprano Kindra Scharich for an evening of pizza, performance, and discussion. We will explore how women are represented in 19th-century French poetry and music, and examine the Mallarmé poem that inspired Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. The event includes a special preview performance by Kindra (featured soloist for the upcoming Stanford Philharmonia concert), singing highlights from Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été with pianist Laura Dahl.
