A Reading by Allan Gurganus, Part of the Lane Lecture Series

Allan Gurganus was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina in 1947. His works of fiction have been translated into sixteen languages. His books include Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All, White People, Plays Well with Others, The Practical Heart and Local Souls. Gurganus has received the Wallace Stegner Fellowship, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, a Pen-Faulkner nomination, the American Academy’s Sue Kaufman Prize for best first novel, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Lambda Literary Award, and the National Magazine Award. A Broadway version of “Widow” starred Ellen Burstyn. Film adaptations of Gurganus’s work have won four Emmys. A Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Gurganus co-founded Writers Against Jesse Helms. His next book will be a novel, The Erotic History of a Southern Baptist Church. Allan Gurganus lives in a North Carolina village of six thousand souls.
