A co-production of SRT, Ethics in Society, Stanford Peace + Justice Studies Initiative, and TAPS, Democratically Speaking explores the idea and realities of "democracy," from ancient Greece to the Occupy Movement. This staged reading features a dynamic interplay of voices, including Aeschylus, Thucydides, Euripides, Demosthenes, Plato, Aristotle, Thomas Paine, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Immanuel Kant, Mary Wollstonecraft, Alexander von Humboldt, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, Leo Tolstoy, Sylvia Pankhurst, Rosa Luxemburg, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Arundhati Roy, Noam Chomsky, and a host of others. A timely exploration of "people power" (the root meaning of demos + kratos), Democratically Speaking offers a compelling challenge to all of us in this important US election year.
