Is there an Art of the American Enlightenment?

Drawing on her new book, American Enlightenments: Pursuing Happiness in the Age of Reason (Yale, 2016), Stanford Humanities Center Director Caroline Winterer debunks our national mythology of a unitary, patriotic American Enlightenment to reveal new insights about eighteenth-century American art. She is the Anthony P. Meier Family Professor in the Humanities at Stanford University and the author of three previous books. She received an American Ingenuity Award from the Smithsonian Institution.
