Munir Gur's main academic interest lies in the examination of sonic representations revolving around ideological symbolisms. His current research investigates the jazz scene in Turkey as a microcosm in which he observes the interplay of music and ideology, contesting positionalities in various nationalism(s) and cosmopolitanism(s), class conflict and differing forms of conservatism.

Sensory Reimaginings of Citizenship: Makam and Belonging Across Contemporary Greece and Turkey
Gur's dissertation project traces the Ottoman music tradition called "makam" as it is performed and lived in main cosmopolitan centers of Turkey and Greece. He is doing a multi-sited ethnography that focuses on the perceived meaning of this music by its practitioners.
