Data Scarcity and Historical Institutionalisms

Ümit is a PhD candidate in the Department of Classics, working on the history of the eastern Mediterranean. His research interests focus broadly on two different, though closely related, subjects. His first area of research focuses on the ancient economies of the eastern Mediterranean, particularly the intersections of fiscal policies, monetary regimes, and issues of property. The second one is the making of social stratification systems, with a special emphasis on their institutional underpinnings and transformations. His dissertation project combines these interests in a study on the social lives of fiscal institutions, examining the forms, causes, and consequences of institutional transformations in the distinct fiscal regimes of the eastern Mediterranean to understand the processes of institutional change as well as to answer how similar fiscal arrangements lead to divergent outcomes. Before coming to Stanford, Ümit earned his BA and MA in History from Boğaziçi University, Istanbul.
