Eric Sundquist based his remarks on Paule Marshall's 1969 novel, "The Chosen Place, the Timeless People," one of the first African American novels to make the black Atlantic diaspora and its rich heritage in slave culture a central subject. It explores the centuries-long intertwined histories of blacks and Jews, whose representative experiences of Exodus and Holocaust at once united and divided them as two people of exile and whose twentieth-century alliance became increasingly fractious during the 1960's.
