For the first Eurasian Empires workshop of the academic year, we will be joined by Professor Lâle Can (CUNY) who will present a paper titled "An Ottoman Siberia in Yemen: Punitive Mobility and the Geography of Exile in Late Ottoman History."
Lâle Can is Associate Professor of History at The City College of New York and Graduate Center, CUNY. Her research focuses on migration, imperial belonging, and law in late Ottoman history. She is the author of Spiritual Subjects: Central Asian Pilgrims and the Ottoman Hajj at the End of Empire (Stanford University Press, 2020) and co-editor of The Subjects of Ottoman International Law (Indiana University Press, 2020).
She is currently writing a book on how exile shaped the late Ottoman Empire.
