This is an Archive of a Past Event

Adrienne Keene ('07, Cherokee), author of the blog Native Appropriations will be at Muwekma's House Seminar to discuss her use of social media to bring attention the the appropriation of Native American culture by "mainstream" society; her time at Stanford, Harvard, and Brown; and whatever else might come up.

As a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, Adrienne is passionate about reframing how the world sees Native cultures.  Through her writing and activism, she questions and problematizes the ways Indigenous people are represented in fashion, the media and pop culture - asking for celebrities, large corporations and designers to consider the wasy they incorporate "Native" elements into their work.  Outside of her blog, Adrienne holds a doctorate from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and is a postdoctoral fellow in Native American Studies at Brown University, where her research focuses on Native students navigating the college application and transition process, highlighting stories of resilience and success.
