Please join us for a complimentary lunch and an exclusive preview of a documentary film produced by Latinx Art Beyond Museum Walls (LABMW), a multimedia research project led by Dr. Rose Salseda and a 2023 recipient of the Changing Human Experience Humanities Seed Grant, the Burt McMurtry Arts Initiatives Fund, and the Stanford Associates Grant. Attendees will be given an introduction to LABMW and the opportunity to provide feedback on the first in-progress film of a four-part documentary series to be launched in 2024. This event also marks the launch of the Bay Area Latinx Art and Activism Research Workshop at the Stanford Humanities Center.
About the Speaker
Rose Salseda is an assistant professor in the Department of Art and Art History and a faculty affiliate with the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity; African and African American Studies; the Center for Latin American Studies; and American Studies at Stanford University. Specializing in both the fields of African American and U.S. Latinx art, and with a research background in the art of the African Diaspora in Latin America and the Caribbean, Salseda's research explores the politics of race, identity, and representation.
About the Series
Bay Area Latinx Art and Activism (BALAA) highlights the important work of artists and provides audiences with a deeper understanding of the people and programs that have been long-time supporters of the community by inviting art workers, activists, scholars, and other stakeholders to discuss this vital history and ongoing effort. This workshop will shed light on these critical and dynamic Latinx art histories, from those that exist at Stanford University to those across the Greater Bay Area. For nearly fifty years, both campus and off-campus efforts have recognized the importance of Latinx art to social justice movements, the imagining of just and liberatory futures, and the building of cultural pride, especially when the community faced explicit forms of racism and xenophobia. BALAA works in consultation with Latinx Art Beyond Museum Walls to recover the critical art histories of grassroots initiatives. This research workshop is co-led by Dr. Rose Salseda and Javier Arellano Vences.
