A note on the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's decision to "translate" Shakespeare's plays for a contemporary audience.

Once again, we can see that almost the entire world is trembling with the expectation of change.  It looks like the world is refusing to suffocate itself with the single philosophy and single ideology that is already there for the last 20 years.

Terry Teachout's love of theater, his leisurely pacing, and his old-fashioned-ish musical tastes sometimes leave me with the impression that he's a bit out-of-step with contemporary culture. But then he contributes a column that's so on it snaps into focus just how with it he is, how much he understands the pulse of contemporary life.
