Alternative History versus Zombie History: Contingency, Agency, and Narrative Representation

Date and Time:
Thursday, October 16, 2014. 12:00 PM - 01:30 PM
Meeting Location:
Humanities Center Board Room
Meeting Description:
The unparalleled popularity of alternative histories today seems to open up a space for individual agency that was long denied by historical determinism. But a new modality of such narratives is emerging: a "zombie history", in which the future recycles the past, and any change brings us back to the status quo. From historiography to science fiction, from politics to pop-culture, this talk addresses the troubling implications of "zombie history" for both society and individual.
