Dr. George Derek Musgrove: The End of the Black Panther Party?

Date and Time:
2021
Meeting Location:
Zoom
Workshop:
CORE: Critical Orientations to Race and Ethnicity
Meeting Description:

The verdict ruling former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of the murder of George Floyd has brought painfully overdue solace and relief. It also underscores, however, that historic and ongoing acts of systemic racism and violence will continue to plague the United States, as long as this country continues to suffer police brutality, race-based violence, and white supremacy. We hope all are finding time to reflect on the celebratory ruling, and also the dark past and present it resurfaces, and on a brighter, more just future ahead. We look forward to convening on May 7 at 4 pm PDT for our final Black Panther Reading Group meeting of the academic year, co-facilitated by Jean Yi and Emily Nichols, and featuring guest scholar Dr. George Derek Musgrove!

Dr. Musgrove is associate professor of history and Africana studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He is the author of Rumor, Repression, and Racial Politics: How the Harassment of Black Elected Officials Shaped Post-Civil Rights America (U. of Georgia, 2012), and co-author, with Chris Myers Asch, of Chocolate City, A History of Race and Democracy in the Nation’s Capital (UNC, 2017). His latest project is “Black Power in Washington, D.C.” a web-based map of Black Power activism in the nation’s capital between 1961 and 1998. His work has appeared in the Washington Post, National Public Radio, the New York Times and The Root. He is currently working on a book project tentatively titled “We Must Take to the Streets Again”: The Black Power Resurgence in Conservative America, 1980-97, which explores the burst of black activism that rose in opposition to the urban crisis and the conservative retrenchment. He earned his PhD from New York University in 2005 and now lives with his wife and two sons in Washington, D.C.
