Probabilistic inference as a domain-general mechanism for learning and development

Date and Time:
Thursday, January 28, 2016. 04:00 PM - 05:30 PM
Meeting Location:
Building 460, Room 126
Meeting Description:
Speaker:
Fei Xu is Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley.
Meeting description:
Much recent research in cognitive development has focused on how probabilistic inference is an important mechanism for understanding learning and developmental change. I will present several lines of research reviewing the evidence for this claim. I will also discuss a broader overall framework suggesting that infants and young children are rational constructive learners, and probabilistic inference may be one of several mechanisms that drive development.
