English vs. Filipino vs. Literature
An August 24 article in English on the website of Manila Bulletin raised a fuss first, because it was published, and second, because it was later removed from the website.  I did not react to the article, but several readers did, by posting—without my consent but of course to my delight—an old speech of mine in my blog.

There must be something right with a country, when your guide talks to you on your hike outside Bogota about his love for Llosa, Cortázar, Hemingway, Kazantzakis, and Tolstoy. And then at the end of the hike he asks for a list of novels and poets he should read! Am I living in the wrong country or what?
